How to Make a Good Impression in 5 Minutes

17.02.2016

Laura Williams, International Recruitment Officer at Goldsmiths, University of London, visited our school on the 16th of February, 2016 and gave an interactive presentation on university application and writing a personal statement. Goldsmiths has been part of the University of London for over 100 years and has subject offerings within the creative arts, entrepreneurial business and management, psychology, social sciences and computing. It’s a campus university located in South East London. The university Art, Design and Media programmes are ranked in the top 10 in the UK.

Yesterday we had a great seminar with the Goldsmiths University representatives. They shared very useful information with us about applying to universities both in the UK and America. First of all, Laura Williams told us what students need to show in their personal statement. Also, the professors helped us to find our strong points and reveal them to the best advantage. In the end some of us role-played the so called «elevator game». I would like to thank everyone who organized this event as it was extremely useful to me.

The presentation was quite exciting and informative. The representative of Goldsmiths University was very active and tried to keep us involved in the process of understanding how we should apply to a university. There was a very interesting game where «in an elevator» we were taught how to attract people’s attention and how to make them interested in you and your skills and want them to hire you. We were shown how to speak, how to fit everything you wanted to say in a limited amount of time (60 seconds).

All in all, I adored the presentation and understood that a chance of your future success and your career may depend on the 60 seconds, a sort of once in a lifetime chance.

This week we were visited by two representatives of Goldsmiths University. Their presentation taught us how to write a personal statement, a paper that could help a person tremendously while looking for a place at a university. Several people had the chance to try and present their improvised statements to the representatives, and I had the honor to be one of those people. What I really liked about this presentation was how interactive it was. The representatives were quite happy to answer any and all questions they were asked. However, I believe that the importance of a personal statement is exaggerated. Certainly, it’s a kind of important, but not so important to go over it in the 9th grade.

I’ve never heard about Goldsmiths before. So, it was a good opportunity to get useful information about its departments and campus. When students graduate from Goldsmiths, they will also graduate from the University of London. I have time to think... Why not?
